Backlink Your Pingbacks For Extra Link Juice

Smart pingbacks

As a marketer who relies on SEO, I am always looking for every edge I can get. If I can automate some aspect of my link building or add a little bit of link juice to each of my links then it would be smart to take it right?

Today I want to introduce Smart Pingbacks, my newest WordPress plugin. I developed it for anyone who builds backlinks and wants to add a little more juice to their link building efforts by taking advantage of the pingbacks that you have on your site.

What Is a Pingback?

If anyone links back to a post on your site from another WordPress blog then you will receive a notification on your site about it. This is recorded on your blog as a pingback. The crucial component of the pingback that we are interested in is that it contains the url of the blog that linked to you (the pingback url).

For us link builders, this gives us access to the the backlinks that we are building, especially if you are using blog networks to help you build your links. Now, it doesn’t capture every single link, but it does get enough of them in general to be useful.

What Does It Do?

Smart Pingbacks will do two things for you.

First, it allows you to export your pingback urls to a text file on your local computer. But if you want more control, it will also allow you to filter your pingbacks by individual posts, pages or even time period.

While you can normally see your pingbacks in your WordPress admin comments page, there is no easy way to get these pingback urls easily. But with Smart Pingbacks, you can get all these urls with a click of a button.

Second, Smart Pingbacks automatically creates RSS feeds containing your pingback urls. You will get a global rss feed that contains the most recent pingbacks for your site. Plus each post or page gets its own feed as well that contains the most recent pingbacks for the post or page.

These pingback RSS feeds are dynamic, and get updated each time your site receives a new pingback.

Smart Pingbacks Options

How Is It Going To Help You?

In isolation, Smart Pingbacks won’t do much. But in combination with some other tools and services it will allow you to do some creative things to get more of your links indexed and increase the power of your link building efforts. To give you some ideas, here are some ways that I’ve been using Smart Pingbacks myself.

  • Submit your pingback urls to a backlink indexing service. My favorites include Backlink Energizer and Backlink Index Express. These services will build additional links to your backlinks automatically and help get them indexed more easily.
  • Submit your pingback RSS feed to RSS directories. Feedagg, Feedage, and Zimbio are ones I like to use myself. But there are hundreds of free RSS directories to submit your feed to. Each submission will build an additional link back to your backlinks. And since your feed is dynamically updated when new pingbacks come in, each new link you build will get backlinked automatically!
  • Automated social network and microblog posting. This is another great way to build backlinks to your backlinks automatically. Hootsuite has a free service which will allow you to submit your pingback RSS feed and it will automatically post each pingback url to Twitter, Facebook as they come in.
  • Perform link analysis of your backlinks. This is what I’ve been using for my Link Building Lab case studies to analyze various backlink sources I’ve been using to test their effectiveness. Most backlink sources hide where your backlinks are coming from, so this gives me an easy way to find them.

These are just some of the ways I am using Smart Pingbacks myself. But I’m certain that many of you guys will think of other creative ways to use the plugin that I would never have thought of myself.

I’m even taking advantage of the pingback RSS feed in my upcoming product called Smart Link Indexer which will be a service that allows you to index your backlinks automatically. Other indexing products should be able to take advantage of this feature as well, if they choose.

How Do I Get It?

Smart Pingbacks is on sale now for $12. This gets you an unlimited site license and free updates for life. I even back up my plugin with a full lifetime guarantee.

That’s right. If you don’t like the plugin for whatever reason, just email me and I will refund your money right away.

So really, there is no excuse not to grab yourself a copy and start getting more of your links indexed right away.

Got any questions about my new plugin? Feel free to leave a comment and I will reply as quickly as possible.

Thanks for the resource, Chris.

I for one am looking forward to your indexing software release.

This plugin is great, but I’d still need to take further steps to actually work on indexing – something that I never find the time to do.

Thanks Ana. Yup, the plugin is actually just the starting point for making indexing easier. Next, I am going to work on integrating it with other 3rd party indexing services (as well as my own product). We will see how that goes. :)

Great idea Chris, although I’m still not sold on the idea of pingbacks; too often I see junk with them, or a ton of spam. I finally just turned them off completely to solve the problem.

After reviewing yours I might have to change my thoughts there :)

Hi Douglas. So it depends. If you’re building links through blog networks or similar sources then some of these pingbacks can indeed be valuable since these links are providing you link juice. However, if you don’t do any of that stuff, then the plugin won’t be of much use.

emmanuel February 14, 2012 at 5:55 am

Hi Chris, The settings just say ‘no pingbacks’ this is for a new site… am I missing something?

Hi Emmanuel. So if it’s a new site, you may not have any pingbacks. To check, go to your Wordpress control panel and check the Comments page. Near the top, you can filter by ‘Pings’ and press the Filter button. If nothing shows up, then you don’t have any pingbacks and things are working properly.

If some pingbacks do show up, then please let me know as that could be a bug.

If you use Akismet or CommentLuv Premium, they both will filter out most of the spammy pingbacks.
